DiCE: What We Do

Diversity in Conferences and Events (DiCE) is a social enterprise based in the UK. Our mission is to advance Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace through the platform of conferences and events. Today, we will be answering the question of, what is a diversity consultant?

Diversity and inclusion in the workplace isn’t just ‘best practice’. It’s a business basic. Overlooking what’s important can hurt your business in ways you might not have thought about. Having a firm grasp on what it entails has clear advantages when it comes to business achievement and maintainability. Organisations are making headway when it comes to noteworthy diversity and inclusion, but more still needs to be done. There has never been a more crucial time to bring these issues to the forefront of the minds of organisations throughout the UK, and that is the aim of diversity consultants. Regardless of sector, diversity and inclusion is for all.

So, what is a diversity consultant?

We know that diversity and inclusion is important to have in the workplace. But why exactly is it so important? Well, that’s where a diversity consultant can help you out. They can come into your workplace and help you explore questions such as, what benefits can it bring your organisation? How can you implement strategies that prioritise diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation? They will support you in your decision making and advocate for best practice, so that you can ensure your organisation is as diverse as possible, and get the most out of it.

So, what is a diversity consultant here to help you with? Let’s take a look at just some of the benefits that hiring a consultant can have for your business:

  • Different perspectives. Hiring from a diverse pool of candidates naturally means that you will have a wider range of perspective within your organisation. People who have a variety of experiences will bring these experiences and the varied skills they have gained to the table. This benefits the whole organisation because they will bring fresh ideas and a renewed sense of creativity. Furthermore, everyone in the organisation will be exposed to a wider range of perspectives, helping them to be more open, understanding, and learn of new ideas they may not have thought about before!
  • More innovation. Did you know that better diversity and inclusion within teams can lead to higher levels of innovation? A study by Boston Consulting group discovered that organisations with diverse leadership teams reported a 19% higher revenue from innovation, compared to those who do not have diverse management. This is a pretty high figure that just goes to show the benefits diversity can have for an organisation as a whole, not just for employees, but for profits as well!
  • Happier employees. Any good organisations wants their employees to be happy, right? Not only is it a good thing to have, it means that a company is more likely to retain staff for longer, and have a lower employee turnover as a result. Diversity and inclusion in the workplace leads to happier employees because everyone feels accepted, no matter their gender, sexuality, race, and background. This is a win-win situation for employers and employees alike- employees are more content at work, and employers retain them for longer, leading to reduced hiring costs.

Hopefully, this has helped to answer your question of what is a diversity consultant. These are just a few of the many benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. At DiCE, we work to advocate for it in the events industry. But, it’s of the utmost importance, no matter what industry you are in. We will not stop until true diversity and inclusion is achieved for all.

Barriers to diversity and inclusion that you should be aware of

At DiCE, we are huge advocates for diversity and inclusion in the events industry and beyond. Now that we have answered the question of what is a diversity consultant, we hope that you agree that it is important too, and something that every organisation should be working towards. Having said this, we know that there are certain barriers to true diversity and inclusion that some organisations struggle with, that your diversity consultant will be able to help you with, including:

  • A lack of knowledge. If you are an advocate for diversity and inclusion in your workplace, you may find yourself becoming frustrated at your colleague’s lack of knowledge about the subject. Everyone has to start somewhere, and trying to teach people about diversity and inclusion who may not know much about the benefits of it is one of the most worthwhile things that everyone can do within their organisations!
  • A lack of resources. In a similar way, unfortunately, many organisations still do not allocate enough budget or resources to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in their workplaces. But, by advocating for it and it’s many benefits to employees and employers alike, employers are more likely to recognise the advancement that it can make for their organisations!
  • No inclusive leadership. What good is an organisation if their leaders are poor? This is the same for diversity and inclusion! If the leaders are not dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, then it is unlikely to have a big impact throughout the rest of the organisation. We believe that inclusive leadership is the key to making a true, long-lasting impact, no matter what industry you are in.

Despite the barriers to diversity and inclusion, there are things that we can all do to advance it in the workplace. Why not get in touch with us today to find out more?

Celebrating Diversity

The beauty of DiCE is that it attracts people from across organisations. Everyone in an organisation has a responsibility for diversity and inclusion, and by including individuals from all levels of a business hierarchy it’s possible to ensure everyone feels supported and recognised. Diversity and inclusion should not be a tick in the box – it should be a natural part of an organisation’s culture. Diversity should be celebrated and included in an organisation’s culture. Now we have answered the question of what is a diversity consultant, let us tell you a bit more about what we do in this space! DiCE is about supporting and improving corporate cohesion and productivity in teams by championing inclusivity and diversity.

We believe that all organisations can benefit in these ways:

Learn, Understand, Implement

Mentoring Programme

Our main offering is our Mentoring Programme. The DiCE Mentoring Programme is based on the connection between the tutor and mentee being complementary in nature; empowering the partnership to make fundamental transformational change. The DiCE Mentoring programme will provide opportunities for individuals from under-represented groups (BAME, gender, LGBT+ and disabled staff) across the events industry to be paired with Mentors within the events industry or from other industries (if they ae student level to Senior Account / Project Manager level they get a mentor who is from within the events industry and if they are above this level, then they get paired with a Mentor from the private sector).

The aim here is to create an incredible union where information and comprehension of their lived experience are also utilised to influence positive change for both Mentor and Mentee. The partnership should directly impact the Mentee, allowing them to grow and flourish on both a personal and professional level. Their lived experience should also help the Mentor gain fresh insight, allowing them to influence change within their own organisation as well. Mentoring is at the heart of everything we do as a social enterprise and consultant dedicated to diversity and inclusion, as we believe that it truly can bring about change.
